We here at TeamBreakthrough strongly believe in the benefits strength training. That is why you will see it heavily included in our BreakThrough Classes and involved in all our PT sessions. With the Government’s Budget having been announced on Monday we thought it would be apt to show you how we here at TeamBreakthrough our doing our bit by trying to keep the annual medical costs per individual down.
Let me explain…
For many years the outlook on strength training had negative connotations. For young children it was believed it would stunt growth for example and up until the last 10 years really, it was seen as negative for women in that it would create a bodybuilder-ish, bulky physique. Hopefully by now you know these facts aren’t true.
We wont go into massive detail on the benefits of strength training this week, however here is a very brief overview of some of them:
- Increased muscle mass
- Improved strength (obviously)
- Improved muscular endurance
- Improved Capillary Density
- Improved bone density
- Improved mobility
- Improved Aerobic and Anaerobic Capacity
- Weight Loss
- Burns a TONNE of calories (keep an eye out for a blog on this soon).
However, there is also another benefit that has come to light recently. A study was conducted on the health care costs associated with muscle weakness in the UK. Here is a brief summary of their findings:
They tested the heath care costs of individuals with muscle weakness and without muscle weakness. Costs associated with primary care consultations and visits, outpatient and inpatient secondary care, medications, and formal (paid) as well as informal care for each participant were calculated with the strength test being grip test; a common test used to discover an individuals strength.
It found that the annual cost of individuals without muscle weakness was £822 less than those considered with muscle weakness. Individuals without muscle weakness cost £1885 per annum whereas those with muscle weakness cost £2707.

It just goes to show that besides all the health benefits of strength training it can also have a massive benefit on health care costs in the UK.
